Preparing For The Gold: Bobsled Training

Published: September 15, 2006
Wrestlers have to weight train and maintain. Track runners have to train for speed and endurance. But, more broadly, any athlete hones their strength, stamina, and skill in the off-season of their sport.
Therefore, bobsled training entails certain criteria cross-bred between wrestling and track and field.
Although bobsled training maintains its weight and height requirements, weight is the driving criterion for speed and endurance. In order to reach faster speeds for a longer period of time, muscle and force have to work together, which requires intense exertion. Also, it helps increase the speed if the sledders can increase mass and weight, thus taking the bulk away from the sled itself. A lighter sled will go faster than a heavier one because it takes less effort to push a lighter sled. The relationship between bodies and equipment, at rest and in motion, is all a matter of simple physics.
The necessary strength for the sport is achieved through rigorous training. Weightlifting, running, and racing are the basic activities bobsled training uses to condition bobsledders. In fact, the Israeli Bobsled Team has a specific list of requirements that can tell any player what to strive for in bobsled training:
1. Must weigh around 220 lbs.
2. Stand about 5 ft. and 9 in. tall.
3. Race up to 98 ft. in 30 sec. and 328 ft. in 11.5 sec.
4. Bench press 264 lbs.
5. Power clean 220 lbs. (or body weight).
6. Vertical jump of 2 ft. or higher.
The FIBT even has a "bob school" that trains aspiring players in the off-season. The bobsled training develops fundamental skills in piloting. Learning to control the equipment is a major step towards comfort and self-control. At the same time, students are trained individually for speed and weight to reinforce piloting skills. All of the bobsled training is rounded out by monthly team meetings and races on a regulation track. Experience is, after all, the best teacher.
As a whole, bobsled training only involves three basic activities: weight training, speed training, and drills. The stronger and faster and more practiced the racers, the better the chances for a more successful season. It pays to work hard and smart.
Bobsled training combines weight strength with speed, endurance and conditioning. Preparation for skillfully handling their equipment and bodies on ice is vital to bobsledders.
