Governing Bodies Of Bobsledding

The National Basketball Association oversees the rules and regulations for American professional basketball; The National Football League does the same for American professional football.

Baseball gets two leagues! "Hmm, am I an American League team, or am I a National League team? How's a player to know?" But these two leagues, like many other child organizations, must answer to the almighty Major League.

Aside from American sports’ corporate-styled infrastructures, governing bodies of bobsledding really only consist of two main organizations: the International Olympic Committee and the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Toboganning.

As a governing body, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the most immediate official to oversee Olympic bobsledding. This particular bobsledding governing body is responsible for on site activities. The major concerns of IOC are to track building and regulation, scheduling, facilitation (for training, medical emergency, recuperation, etc.) and competition. Everything the IOC handles, as a governing body, entails gearing up for the big day: the Olympic race. If there is any discrepancy, the IOC has complete authority to enforce penalties for infractions of Olympic and international rules.

But even the IOC must adhere to a higher governing body. The highest official governing body of bobsledding is Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Toboganning (FIBT). Whether a bobsledding meet is taking place in Sri Lanka (highly unlikely) or Iceland, FIBT is the governing body with the final say over any internationally recognized bobsledding event. FIBT writes the official rules, decides the regulations for worldwide meets and doles out the final penalties for infringements. In fact, FIBT makes final decision over unresolved IOC disputes.

FIBT is a large governing body of bobsledding because it is comprised of the international community. There are numerous chairpersons and committee officers. Currently the governing body itself is being led by Robert H. Storey of Ottawa, Canada. Storey, a member since 1984 and president since 1994, has recently been re-elected to his high-ranking position.

If a nation decides to form a bobsledding team and compete internationally, then it may want to become more acquainted with the FIBT guidelines and rules first. If there is enough reason, they should consult the IOC.

The FIBT is the NBA, NFL or MLB of bobsledding. It is the reason for the bobsledding season.
